Learning a foreign language is an exciting and valuable opportunity that can enhance students’ future prospects, build confidence, and deepen their understanding of the world. At The Blue Coat School, the study of Spanish equips students with a highly transferable and demonstrable skill that is both practical and something to be proud of.
Through our curriculum, students are immersed in the language and culture of Spanish-speaking countries, developing procedural knowledge in grammar and vocabulary while practising the four key skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Cultural study is an integral part of the course, allowing students to explore traditions, values, and perspectives that differ from their own and to gain a deeper appreciation of the diversity of the global community.
Learning a language is challenging and intellectually demanding, helping students develop resilience, perseverance, and a willingness to take risks in their learning. As they progress, students become more confident global citizens, curious about other cultures, and capable of understanding and communicating effectively in both spoken and written Spanish. By the time they leave The Blue Coat School, students are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to continue engaging with the language in further study, travel, or future careers.
Curriculum Journey
In Year 7, students begin their Spanish journey by learning how to introduce themselves and communicate basic personal information. Through topics such as descriptions, school and daily routines, they establish a strong foundation in essential vocabulary and grammar. Students learn to express opinions, describe themselves and others, discuss school life and talk about their weekly activities. Throughout the year, the emphasis is on building confidence in using the language and developing accurate pronunciation, enabling students to communicate in simple but meaningful contexts.
In Year 8, students broaden their understanding of both language and culture. They explore topics including their home, city and local environment, while also studying the work of Antoni Gaudí and the unique character of Barcelona. Students discuss free time activities and technology, investigate food and healthy lifestyles and gain insight into everyday life in Spain. As their linguistic knowledge develops, students begin using a wider range of tenses and structures, allowing them to express increasingly sophisticated ideas and opinions. This year strengthens students’ ability to communicate independently while deepening their awareness of Hispanic culture.
Year 9 provides an important bridge towards GCSE study. Students explore the wider Spanish-speaking world through topics linked to holidays, travel and cultural diversity. They develop the ability to discuss past, present and future experiences while considering their studies, career aspirations and future plans. Students reflect on their own lives and compare them with those of young people across the Hispanic world. The year culminates in a project focused on Spanish architecture, encouraging students to combine linguistic skills with cultural understanding and independent research.
At GCSE, students extend their linguistic skills through a range of contemporary and relevant themes. In Year 10, they study identity and relationships, free time activities, healthy living, media and technology, and celebrity culture. These topics enable students to discuss personal experiences, social influences and modern lifestyles while developing greater accuracy and fluency. Students learn to express more detailed opinions, justify viewpoints and communicate confidently across all four language skills.
In Year 11, students engage with wider global and cultural themes including the environment, travel and tourism, customs, festivals, celebrations, education and future employment. They develop the ability to discuss complex ideas and social issues while refining examination techniques. By this stage, students can communicate with increasing sophistication, manipulating a range of grammatical structures and vocabulary whilst demonstrating cultural awareness and linguistic independence.
At A Level, students move beyond language learning into the study of Hispanic society, culture, literature and film. In Year 12, students explore traditional and modern values, regional identity, the influence of idols, cyberspace, cultural heritage and equality. They also study Pedro Almodóvar’s acclaimed film Volver, developing analytical and interpretative skills. These topics encourage students to engage critically with issues affecting contemporary Spanish-speaking societies while developing advanced communication skills.
In Year 13, students investigate important social and political issues including immigration, young people and political participation, monarchies and dictatorships, racism, popular movements and social integration. Alongside these themes, students study Gabriel García Márquez’s Crónica de una Muerte Anunciada, analysing literary techniques, themes and historical context. Through discussion, independent research and critical evaluation, students become sophisticated linguists capable of engaging with complex contemporary debates in Spanish. By the end of the course, they are well prepared for university study and careers in an increasingly globalised world.
Beyond the Classroom Experiences
Spanish is enriched through a variety of opportunities that bring language learning to life beyond the classroom. In Year 8, students have the opportunity to visit Barcelona, experiencing Spanish culture, architecture and daily life first-hand. Year 9 students benefit from careers presentations that highlight the value of language skills across a wide range of professions. GCSE students can participate in educational visits to Madrid and attend support and revision clubs in Year 11. At Sixth Form, students can take part in the San Sebastián Exchange, attend cinema workshops linked to their studies and contribute to the school community as Language Prefects. These experiences help develop cultural understanding, confidence and an appreciation of the many opportunities available to successful linguists.
