Making the Move from Primary to Secondary School
Starting secondary school is an exciting milestone, but we understand that it can also feel like a daunting experience for both pupils and their families. At The Blue Coat School Liverpool, we are committed to ensuring that the transition from Year 6 to Year 7 is as smooth, positive and enjoyable as possible.
Our dedicated pastoral and transition teams work closely with pupils, parents and primary schools to ensure every child feels confident and well prepared before they begin their journey with us.
Working with Primary Schools
We have established strong relationships with our partner primary schools and work closely with Year 6 teachers throughout the transition process. Information is shared about each pupil's academic progress, interests, learning needs and wellbeing, allowing us to understand every child as an individual before they join us.
Where appropriate, additional support is planned for pupils who may benefit from extra transition activities, ensuring they feel confident and supported when they start in September.
Induction Events
During the summer term, all new Year 7 pupils are invited to attend our Year 7 Induction Day. This provides an opportunity to:
Parents and carers are also invited to our Year 7 Information Evening, where members of the Senior Leadership Team will introduce the school's expectations, pastoral support, curriculum and key information to help families prepare for the start of secondary school.
Pastoral Care
The wellbeing of every pupil is at the heart of everything we do.
When pupils join The Blue Coat School, they become part of a form group led by a dedicated Form Tutor who will support them throughout their secondary education. This allows tutors to develop strong relationships with pupils and provides parents and carers with a consistent point of contact.
Our Year 7 pastoral team works closely with pupils throughout their first year to ensure they settle quickly, make good academic progress and feel happy, safe and supported.
Keeping You Informed
We believe that the best outcomes are achieved when school and homework together.
Throughout the year we will keep parents and carers informed about their child's progress, achievements and wellbeing. Should any concerns arise, we encourage you to contact us so that we can work together to provide the appropriate support.
Reports
Parents and carers will receive regular reports throughout the academic year, providing updates on academic progress, effort and achievement across each subject.
Parents' Evenings
During Year 7, parents and carers will be invited to attend parents evenings to discuss their child's progress with subject teachers. These meetings provide an opportunity to celebrate successes, discuss progress and explore ways in which school and home can work together to support learning.
Trips and Events
Year 7 Summer School
Our Year 7 Summer School returns this year from Wednesday 19th to Friday 21st August 2026.
Open to all new Year 7 pupils, Summer School is a fantastic opportunity for children to become familiar with their new surroundings before September. Over the three days, pupils will take part in a variety of fun activities, team-building challenges and creative sessions, giving them the chance to make new friends, build confidence and get to know members of staff in a relaxed environment.
This year's programme promises to be bigger and better than ever, with even more opportunities for teamwork, problem-solving and having fun together.
Year 7 Residential Visit – Conway Centre
During Year 7, pupils will also have the opportunity to take part in our residential visit to the Conway Centre.
The Conway Centre welcomes over 130,000 young people each year and provides a safe, supportive environment where pupils can enjoy a wide range of exciting indoor and outdoor activities. The residential experience helps pupils develop independence, resilience, teamwork and confidence while strengthening friendships with their peers.
An Open Partnership
At The Blue Coat School Liverpool, we pride ourselves on maintaining strong relationships with our families. We operate an open and supportive approach, and we encourage parents and carers to contact us whenever they have a question or concern about their child's academic progress, wellbeing or wider school experience.
