  • Year 8 Students Take Part in Merseyside Science and Technology Challenge Day

A group of Year 8 students recently attended an exciting STEM event hosted by Liverpool Hope University. The event brought together students from schools across the Merseyside area, with participants working in mixed teams of four to develop their teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Throughout the day, students took part in a variety of engaging challenges designed to showcase different areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

One challenge involved E-Fit technology, where students used specialist software—similar to that used by police forces—to create digital images of faces from witness descriptions.

In the LEGO Mindstorms Challenge, students programmed robots to remain within a set proximity of one another using sensors and coding techniques, testing both their technical understanding and collaborative skills.

The Electric Car Challenge saw teams design and build a model electric car, experimenting with different components and modifications to improve speed and performance before competing against other teams.

Students also participated in a Diagnostic Challenge, analysing vital signs and medical data to identify potential illnesses and determine which virus a patient may have contracted.

The event provided a fantastic opportunity for students to apply their STEM knowledge in real-world scenarios, collaborate with students from other schools, and experience the breadth of opportunities available within STEM-related fields.

The school is extremely proud of how well the students represented Blue Coat throughout the day.
