Pastoral Support
At The Blue Coat School, we are more than a school community, we are a family. We are proud of the caring, supportive environment we create, where every student feels valued, encouraged and inspired to achieve their very best.
Pastoral care is central to our ethos. We know that students thrive academically when they feel safe, understood and supported. Our strong pastoral provision ensures that every child can flourish, both in their learning and in their personal development, whatever their individual strengths and abilities.
A Strong Start
From the very beginning of their journey with us, we prioritise helping students feel part of the Blue Coat family. Our induction process is carefully designed to build confidence, establish positive relationships and create a strong sense of belonging from day one.
Day-to-Day Support
Students belong to one of six Form Houses: Curie, Franklin, Roscoe, Seacole, Tod and Turing. Form groups and meet daily with their Form Tutor during registration. Form Tutors oversee the day-to-day wellbeing and progress of their pupils, providing consistent support and guidance.
In addition, every year group is led by a Head of Year (HOY). Heads of Year play a key role in overseeing behaviour, wellbeing, safeguarding, achievement and progress. They work closely with Form Tutors, families and senior leaders to ensure that each student is fully supported and able to reach their potential.
Sixth Form Care and Guidance
In the Sixth Form, students join dedicated tutor groups led by Sixth Form Tutors. Students continue to receive high-quality pastoral support as they grow in independence and prepare for higher education, apprenticeships or employment. Our Sixth Form team provides both academic guidance and personal support to help students make informed and confident decisions about their future.

The House System and Merits
Our House system is at the heart of school life at The Blue Coat School. It creates a strong sense of identity, belonging and friendly competition, while encouraging students to contribute positively to the wider school community.
Our House System
Every student is placed into one of our six Form Houses when they join the school. The House system brings together students from different year groups, helping to foster mentoring, teamwork and a shared sense of pride. Throughout the year, Houses compete in a wide range of events, including academic challenges, sporting competitions, creative activities and charitable initiatives.
This vertical structure encourages leadership opportunities for older students, while younger students benefit from the support and encouragement of their peers. The House system strengthens relationships across the school and reinforces our ethos of community and mutual respect.
Merits and Recognition
We believe in recognising and celebrating success in all its forms. Our merits system recognises and rewards students across five key areas, known as SHAPE: Service, Hard Work, Ambition, Perseverance and Empathy. Merits are awarded by staff to celebrate these qualities and contribute both to individual achievement and to overall House totals, fostering personal pride as well as collective success.
Students can earn badges, certificates, awards and public recognition through assemblies and celebration events. This system promotes a culture of encouragement and aspiration, motivating students to consistently demonstrate our core values both inside and outside the classroom.
Through the combined strength of our House system and merits programme, we nurture confidence, character and a strong sense of belonging, ensuring that every student feels valued and inspired to succeed.
