Year 10 Food Technology Students Explore Manchester’s Northern Quarter

Our Year 10 Food Technology students recently enjoyed an inspiring educational visit to Manchester’s vibrant Northern Quarter, accompanied by Mrs Graham.

As part of a guided walking food tour, students explored a variety of independent food businesses, sampling a range of dishes while learning about the ingredients, preparation techniques and cultural influences behind the food they experienced.

The visit provided valuable support for their GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition studies. Throughout the day, students considered food provenance, nutrition, sensory qualities, presentation and the factors that influence consumer food choices. They also observed how businesses adapt to changing food trends, dietary requirements and customer expectations.

By evaluating the flavour, texture, aroma and appearance of different foods, students developed the sensory analysis skills that are essential for both their practical assessments and written coursework. The experience also provided inspiration for recipe development, menu planning and the Non-Examined Assessment component of the GCSE course, where students research, create, test and evaluate their own food products.

In addition to enhancing their subject knowledge, the trip offered an insight into the wider hospitality and catering industry. Students explored the importance of branding, customer service, sustainability and the use of locally sourced and seasonal ingredients, while gaining an appreciation of the diverse career opportunities within the sector.

A huge thank you to Mrs Graham for organising such a fantastic learning experience, and well done to all of our Year 10 students for representing The Blue Coat School so positively throughout the day.
