On Friday 1st July eight Year 12 students had the opportunity to visit the Liverpool offices of Barnett Waddingham, a leading actuarial firm. They spent the day learning about the role of an actuary and what a career in actuarial finance might involve. They worked through the mathematical calculations needed to calculate pension contributions and discussed the concept of risk, factors which may influence the rise and fall in the value of pensions and how to predict and account for these issues.
The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and were enthusiastic in their feedback, valuing the opportunity to work with professional actuaries in such a small group. One of the students, Nathan Crist added
“The taster day at Barnett Waddingham was a useful and interesting glimpse into a professional maths career. The firm specialises in designing pension plans for large companies; however the mathematics involved is used in insurance, bookmaking and the gas and oil industry. It was a great way to learn about a major maths profession and to experience a small office working environment.”
The students found that the calculations involved were within their capabilities and gained ‘insider’ knowledge about what employees were looking for in applicants. They came away with firmer plans for their career paths and the various degrees they intended to apply for, as well as useful knowledge about future potential internships.
