Blue Coat trampolinist Tom, of Year 10, has hit the heights by winning a bronze medal in the 13-14 year age group in this year’s World Trampoline Championships.

Tom was a member of the Great Britain team in the 2021 Trampoline Gymnastics World Championships held from 18 to 21 November, at the National Gymnastics Arena in Baku, Azerbaijan.

He won his Bronze in the Synchronised category with his trampoline partner Max, and reached the preliminary level for the Individual category. The actual routine only lasts 30 seconds and in that time the judges look for 10 skills.

What started as just a “fun” hobby when he first tried it out aged six-years at his local gym in Speke, became so enjoyable that he carried on and by seven or eight started to train seriously five times a week for two to three hours after school. As he’s now 14-years-old that accounts for half of his life.

He said: “It’s a hard discipline and a big commitment, but I’m helped by my three coaches at Liverpool Trampoline Gymnastics Academy. Keeping fit enough means eating healthily, and you have to do things in training that you feel you don’t want to do, as you’ve got to build up your flexibility. But I think it’s worth it, although it’s been hard in lockdown.

By seven or eight years-old I was competing in regional competitions and by 2017 had reached national ones, although I’d never planned to do this!”

He achieved a place in the Great Britain team at London’s National Sports Centre in October 2021, and was listed as being from the City of Liverpool. He said: “It was an open competition and you had to hit the scores to qualify for the team. A week before the Championships we flew to Azerbaijan via Istanbul to acclimatise in the Baku training camp and prepare for the competition. The weather was warmish and the arena was very nice.

“I spent the event’s first three days training and took part in the Individual competition on Thursday and the Synchronised competition on Friday evening. I’m very pleased with what I achieved and it’s inspired me to keep going and see how far I can get.”

Inspired by his success, Tom’s sister Elsie has also taken up trampolining!
