As part of our Careers Information Advice and Guidance programme, we welcomed back Old Blues Matt Costello and Kieran O’Sullivan to Blue Coat. The pair delivered an enlightening talk on the benefits of reading English at university, to 120 Year 11 students.

Matt, from the Class of 2010, who read English and History at York University, is now a Heath & Safety Environmental Quality Manager, at Hughes Sea Services. Kieran, from the Class of 2005, read English at Liverpool University and is now its UK Recruitment Manager, having worked abroad before returning to the city.

Matt said: “I work for a marine engineering company, but studying English really builds up your communication and writing skills which play such a big part in any management job dealing directly with people.”

Kieran agreed, adding: ““The benefits of studying English gives you transferable skills, such as being able to organise your thoughts and actions, which are applicable to many different sectors.”

We would like to thank Matt and Kieran for taking time out of their busy work schedules to support our CIAG programme. If you would like to get involved and provide an insight into your career please contact the Development Team at development-team@bluecoatschool.org.uk.
