Members of The Blue Coat School community were treated to a wonderful celebration of music during our Summer Recital, on Tuesday 16th July.
The recital, held for the first time in the beautiful surroundings of the School Chapel, opened with a rousing and hearty performance of Von Suppe’s overture The Poet and Peasant, performed by our Senior Orchestra. Solo performances led by Year 12 student Jessica on clarinet and Year 13 violinist Sophie (both accompanied Year 12 pianist Daniel, on piano) displayed a tremendous amount of confidence and skill during their renditions of Ravel and Wieniawski. Our Intermediate String Group and Flute Ensemble delighted audience members with their selection of enjoyable well known pieces, with individual songs and piano solos performed by older members of the orchestra.
Performing in their first summer recital, members of our Year 7 Choir sang twice, with a great exuberance of passion and joy, as their voices reverberated round the Chapel. Completing the first half of the programme, the Senior School Choir sang the Magnificat with incredible feeling and passion. The first half ended with one of the Choir’s favourite pieces O Thou the Central Orb.
In a new twist, audience member were invited to the courtyard to hear performances from our talented Concert Band, Jazz Group and Brass Ensemble. Late evening sunshine was made all the more enjoyable with strawberries and cream served by the Parents’ Association. As the concert drew to a close the applause from the audience was testament to the excellent playing of all of our talented musicians.
Special thanks must go to the Music Department, in particular Director of Music Mr Emery and Ms Horton for all their hard work in arranging the programme and managing numerous rehearsals to ensure pitch perfect quality.
