Friday 1st July 2016 marked the centenary of the Battle of the Somme. A unique concert was held in the City of Liverpool to pay special tribute to all those who fought and tragically lost their lives during the Battle of the Somme and The Great War.
The concert took place in the beautiful Concert Hall at St George’s Hall, Liverpool. Musical performances came from the ‘Voices of the Valley’ Fron Male Voice Choir, the Mersey Wave Choir and special guest soloist mezzo-soprano Kathryn Rudge (BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist). This tribute in music across 100 years from the battlefields and back home to Liverpool included songs from wartime, opera and musical theatre, poignant readings and a rousing Last Night of the Proms finale.
The event was organised by Bill Sargeant from The Royal British Legion and five students from our Sixth Form read letters and poems from The Great War, enhancing the poignancy of the evening and allowing us to reflect on the sacrifices made. The students, Bobby Sharples, Katie Burke, Helen Roberts, Emily Moore and Alex McWilliam gave remarkable performances and received glowing praise from numerous audience members and the compere, Roger Lyon, from BBC Radio Merseyside, who mentioned them on his programme. All proceeds from the evening went to the Royal British Legion.
