The Blue Coat School community was saddened to hear that Rev Bob Metcalf, former chaplain of the School, passed away during the Christmas holidays.

In 1975 Bob became incumbent of Holy Trinity Church, Wavertree, and chaplain of The Blue Coat School. His ministry at the School lasted nineteen years when he left Holy Trinity to become Archdeacon of Liverpool. As chaplain of the school Bob made his mark most effectively as he possessed a great pastoral heart for staff and students. He conducted Holy Communion services for the boarders each Sunday morning in the School chapel while the boarding house was part of the School.

Weekly assemblies in School were always thought provoking, challenging, relevant and prepared well with the students in mind. Staff were also influenced and inspired by his assembly messages, and warmed to his friendliness.

One of Bob’s sons became a student at the School which brought him closer to the Blue Coat, but this time as a parent. Even after leaving the chaplaincy role Bob still came back to assist as an invigilator in the entrance examinations and to attend school functions and was also a Guardian of the Blue Coat School Foundation. Bob’s Christian witness was clear for all to see in his love of people and friendliness to one and all.

We thank Bob for his significant contribution to the School community over many years and our thoughts are with his friends and family at this time.
