Budding West End musical star and Old Blue Kelsey Walsh, from the Class of 2015, returned to Blue Coat to provide some professional advice and boost the confidence of performers in the new School show, Legally Blonde.
Kelsey’s ambition was always to go into musical theatre and on completed her A Levels was awarded a three-year course at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London.
“Blue Coat is extremely academic and my A Levels were in Art, DT and Psychology. Drama school couldn’t have been more different, but it was also very intense,” she said.
It’s a tough business to be in, needing ambition and resilience. She said: “I was unemployed for a year, but then got breaks performing in a new musical, a concept album and panto in Liverpool. After your first jobs, doors start to open and my ambition is to perform in West End musicals.
“It’s wonderful coming back here and watching the students, thinking that was me not long ago in Les Miserables and West Side Story. I remember Luke James being in Year 7 and he’s now choreographing this show and is taller than me!
“I’ll be back for a week in January to give more serious help. The standard is excellent and it helps to have people like Mr Emery, the Director of Music, encouraging students who’ve got that spark.”
