Design and Technology

Design and Technology is a creative and practical subject that encourages students to apply their knowledge and skills to solve real-world problems. At The Blue Coat School, the Design and Technology curriculum develops students’ ability to design, make, and evaluate products that meet the needs of users, while considering functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability.

Students explore the entire design process, from identifying problems and generating innovative ideas to prototyping, testing, and refining solutions. Through hands-on practical work, they develop technical skills using a range of materials, tools, and manufacturing techniques, alongside an understanding of modern and emerging technologies. The subject also encourages students to consider wider issues such as environmental impact, ethical production, and the role of design in shaping society.

Design and Technology develops key transferable skills, including creativity, problem-solving, project management, and resilience. Students learn to think critically and work iteratively, responding to feedback and adapting their designs to improve outcomes. By the time they leave The Blue Coat School, students are confident, capable designers equipped with the skills and mindset needed to succeed in further study, apprenticeships, or careers in design, engineering, and related fields.
