Our online careers series ‘5 minutes with…’ is now an established part of our Careers Advice and Guidance (CIAG) programme.

The series features some of our youngest Old Blues studying at top institutions providing an insight into university life and their degree, alongside tips on how to support mental health and manage workload. In addition to this, alumni representing various fields including journalism, economics, law and teaching have also shed light on their career path, as well as advice and support on how to succeed in their field.

Highlights from the series so far include:

Anna Ashcroft – Class of 2019 – Dentistry Undergraduate at the University of Bristol

Anna’s top tip for anyone considering studying Dentistry is to build a healthy work/life balance, which is crucial for maintaining good mental health, “always be involved with something outside of your course,” to ensure that you can alleviate stress.

Freddie Berry – Class of 2016 – MSc Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Wellbeing student at the University of Edge Hill

Freddie Berry’s first experience of the teaching sector involved working as an apprentice teaching assistant at a local primary school. This experience led him to Edge Hill University where he studied Primary Education and is now studying for a Masters in Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Wellbeing.

Duncan Cowan – Class of 2011 – Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer at Howbout

Graduating in 2016 Duncan joined Airbus as an electrical engineer working on spacecraft. In 2019 he left Airbus to co-found Howbout, a social calendar and planning app that instantly finds when friends can get together in-person or virtually. His role as Chief Technology Officer involves developing the app as well as testing code.

Ian Brown – Class of 1990 – Regional Director of Rail at AECOM

Ian’s career as a civil and structural engineer has taken him across the globe, but his career highlight to date is his involvement with CrossRail. Currently based in Saudi Arabia, Ian is working with teams around the world to ensure everything comes together to make one transportation system.

Each new clip is added to our ‘5 minutes with…’ series on the video sharing platform Vimeo and shared with students via Teams.
