Old Blue and Laundry Process Development Manager Jack Hayes visited The Blue Coat School on Friday 13th November to deliver the second talk in our series of Sixth Form Career Talks, focusing on his twenty year knowledge and experience in the chemical industry.
Since completing his Chemical and Process Engineering degree from the University of Newcastle in 1994, Jack has held a number of positions within the chemical industry, working for companies such as Nynas, Lubrizol, Valspar and Sun Chemical, gaining a valuable insight into a wide variety of areas including oil refinement, speciality inorganics and inks and coatings. Currently employed by Unilever, one of the world’s largest Fast Moving Consumer Goods Companies, Jack is based at the company’s Port Sunlight Research and Development Laboratory. Working with home care brands including Domestos, Comfort and Persil, Jack’s department is responsible for the scaling up of new innovations from the laboratory to the main factory.
As well as highlighting the work his current job entails, Jack provided our aspiring chemical engineers with a broad picture of the chemical industry; the many sectors the industry comprises of, from biotechnology to pharmaceuticals, the key components that go into making a good chemical engineer including leadership and project management skills and the number of opportunities associated with the industry, such as world travel. On top of this Jack also provided our students with a piece of engineering trivia, stating chemical engineers played a role in the shape of Magnum ice creams, which prior to their involvement would regularly explode during flight transportation.
Jack represents a fantastic role model for current Blue Coat chemists and we thank him for delivering such a broad yet detailed presentation. Our students are extremely grateful and welcome information designed to help them make informed decisions about the career choices available to them.
