Earlier this term our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) Department created an innovative way to celebrate International Women’s Day in a special pan-European way.
Mrs Ward, Head of MFL, explains: “To celebrate such an important day, the department organised a competition of our talented linguists. We asked students to think about a woman in their life whom they admire and to write a short paragraph in Spanish or French telling us about her.
“We were delighted with the response and received a number of fantastic entries highlighting strong family member role models. Our winner, Year 7 student Hibbat, has been awarded a copy of the book ‘We Should All Be Feminists’ by the acclaimed Nigerian-born author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.”
Adichie’s book is based on her Ted Talk in London, which has been viewed more than five million times online, in which she shares her experiences of being an African feminist. She said: “I’m hopeful because I believe deeply in the ability of human beings to remake themselves for the better.”
Those taking part in the competition thoroughly enjoyed developing and expanding their vocabulary whilst writing their competition entries.
