Blue Coat scored several notable success in Maths competitions this year including the Senior Maths Challenge, in spite of the massive impact by the covid crisis causing the cancellation many of the usual events.
The Senior Maths Challenge took place in November and kick-started our usual high levels of success. This was followed by the Mathematical Education on Merseyside Challenges in February and the Sixth Form Pop Maths Quiz in March. Computer Science also got in on the act with the Raspberry Pi competition National Final in April.
Sadly, the UKMT Maths Team Competitions, where we regularly qualify for National Finals, were cancelled. The large number of students we enter for the UKMT Maths Individual Challenges worked against us this year as we looked to reduce gatherings of students and were unable to mix bubbles; this was also true for the BEBRAS Computing Competition where we again have a great track record of success.
Miss Wilson, Head of Maths, said: “Most disappointing was the inability to run the Maths Relay events for the second year running. This huge event engages all of Years 7 to 11 in a Maths Problem-Solving relay ‘race’ and is hugely enjoyed by staff and students alike, as well as the Year 12 volunteers who help out as Team Supervisors.”
The Mathematical Education on Merseyside Challenge went ahead as usual this year and over the February half-term, several students produced solutions to the Challenges. The number of entries was reduced compared to previous years due to school closure at the time, however, our students again achieved notable successes.
In the Challenge for Year 7 and Year 8 students gained prizes as follows:
3rd Prize: Oscar (Year 8)
Certificate of Merit: Zoe and Talha (Year 8)
In the Senior Challenge for Year 9 and Year 10 students gained prizes as follows:
2nd Prize: Fred (Year 10)
3rd Prize: Qiaoi (Year 10), Ayush Shah (Year 9)
Certificate of Merit: Nishka (Year 9), Pranav (Year 10)
In the Open Challenge for Year 11- Year 13 students gained prizes as follows:
1st Prize: Fred (Year 10)
3rd Prize: Sam (Year 12)
4th Prize: Abhiram (Year 12)
Highly Commended: Qiaoi (Year 10)
Certificate of Merit: Ambrose (Year 12), Olivia (Year 11)
Perhaps even more remarkable is the fact that the First Prize and the Highly Commended were awarded to Year 10 students.
Sixth Form Pop Maths Quiz
The Pop Maths Quiz went ‘remote’ this year but Blue Coat Sixth Formers rose to the challenge entering 8 teams to complete via Zoom. Again, successes were high with one of the Teams comprising Safwan, Gorakh, Shahzad, Arkar winning the overall competition. Of the 8 teams entering, 3 were awarded Gold Certificates and 5 achieved Silver.
