During the February half-term a number of Year 7, 9 and 10 Blue Coat mathematicians took part in the Mathematical Education on Merseyside Education Challenge and Senior Challenge. The organisation brings together staff from Liverpool’s three universities and local school teachers, to devise, enable and promote mathematical activities throughout the North West region.
Both competitions consist of roughly 8 questions, with illustrations provided by Peter H Ackerley. This year’s theme centred on the 150th anniversary of the publication of Lewis Carroll’s Alice and Wonderland.
Year 9 and 10 students competing in the Senior Challenge performed exceptionally well with the following students gaining prizes:
- First Prize (The Carol Pearl Award) – Jonathan
- Second Prize – Yan and Sophia
- Third Prize – Kieran and Anika
- Consolation Prize – Alice, Garance, Fathima, Magda and Niru
- Certificate of Merit – Sophie and Alex
This was an impressive achievement and all students have been invited to attend a Presentation Evening at Liverpool University in April.
In the Challenge event, Year 7 students Safwan, Latif, Phoebe and David all gained Certificates of Merit and have been invited to attend a Presentation Evening at Liverpool University in May.
Congratulations to everyone who took part in this year’s competition.
