Year 13 student James Wainwright is passionate about filmmaking. Always looking for new opportunities to develop and demonstrate his skills, James has supported a number of virtual Blue Coat events including our carol service and mock presidential election.

Away from the camera James also supports his brother who has Down Syndrome, and volunteers as a football coach with Down Syndrome Liverpool and Everton in the Community.

James has just produced a film with his brother and sister as part of the Easterseals Disability Film Challenge, an international film competition that provides filmmakers, with and without disabilities, the opportunity to collaborate to tell unique stories that showcase disability in its many forms.

The film challenge is a weekend-long filmmaking contest, open to all, that provides a platform for new voices in the entertainment industry. Each year, aspiring storytellers are prompted to creatively write, produce and complete a short film. Challenge winners receive invaluable access to entertainment professionals, opening the door to an industry notoriously difficult to enter.

The competition was launched by American actor Nic Novicki. As someone with a disability, Nic wanted to give people with disabilities an opportunity to showcase their talents. Despite being the largest minority group, people with disabilities are the least represented in media. This competition exists because the more attention these films get, the more people with disabilities around the world are employed as a result, as people see and think of disability differently.

The final phase of the event, which runs until Monday 5 April, involves competitors creatively promoting their creations. To reach as large an audience as possible, James has released his film, The Escapist, on three major social media platforms. As of Thursday 1 April, James’ film has attracted over 3,000 views, putting him in strong contention.
