Over the course of six weeks, students took part in the first virtual Great Blue Coat Bake Off. A baking competition with a delicious linguistic twist, competitors created some beautiful bakes from around the world, whilst also developing and enhancing their language skills.
Organised by Head of Languages Mrs Ward, students and staff received a delicious recipe at the start of the week in French or Spanish and were invited to treat their families to classic French and Spanish dishes, including Tarte au Citron Meringuée and Gallestas Nutella. Competitors tastebuds travelled as far afield as Canada and Mexico to sample Pancakes aux myrtilles et sirop d’érable and Natilla de Vainilla. Sharing photographs of their impressive culinary creations Mrs Ward had a very difficult job awarding her student Star Baker and Linguists Legend titles.
Reflecting on the competition, Mrs Ward remarked, “We wanted to celebrate a range of cultures and encourage pupils to use their French and Spanish skills in their baking at home, learning key verbs and nouns used in recipes, whilst hopefully learning a bit about the dish and country of origin too. We have thoroughly enjoyed seeing all of our amazing entries for The Great Blue Coat Bake Off, we have been so impressed with the entries, with Star Bakers from all year groups, and some particularly talented staff taking part too! Thank you to all those who have taken part and a special thank you to our Development Fund supporters and Parents’ Association for funding our competition prizes!”
