Lockdown has led to creativity in all the Blue Coat School departments, not least Music, which devised a whole new range of online workshops, with West End performers and international singers hosting online student sessions, thanks to generous support from a local Trust.
Director of Music Mr Simon Emery and the Music Department organised the online Musical Theatre Workshops with London-based dance and drama professionals, as a way to keep our music theatre students active, as sadly there’s no school show this year.
These events were amazing opportunities for our students and unlike anything the school has staged previously. The six workshops over a month included vocal and dance masterclasses based around famous shows like West Side Story, 42nd Street, Matilda, Pinocchio and contemporary West End hits like Hamilton and Wicked.
Mr Emery said: “The Musical Theatre Workshops turned out incredibly well. Lucy Aiston’s Dance Masterclass had loads of energy, along with others led by Joshua St Clair, Layton Williams, Gemma Scholes and Leslie Bowman. The Vocal Workshops with Grace Galloway were very interesting on how the voice works.”
Thanks to these contacts it is hoped that the Music theatre students will get the chance of a trip to London and a theatre backstage tour.
