The Blue Coat School has appointed its first apprentice, marking the start of an ongoing commitment to building an apprenticeship programme that will support the growth of the school’s talented and engaged workforce.
Matthew Burke, who recently started his Property Maintenance Apprenticeship at the School, will complete practical, work-based training while studying to gain a recognised vocational qualification.
Matthew said: “This apprenticeship is a great opportunity for me to train in an area that will help me to progress my future career in estates management.
“I like practical, hands-on work, so college and university were not the best options for me. This way I can earn whilst learning at the same time.”
“I have got a lot to learn and a lot to look forward to.”
After commencing his role in summer 2021, Matthew has already become a valued member of the school’s dedicated Estates Team, offering new skills and qualities that the whole school will benefit from. The School is now planning to expand its apprenticeship programme, providing opportunities within a range of specialisms across the workforce.
Ms Yates, Headteacher, said: “Our support teams at The Blue Coat School are committed to providing the highest level of service and take great pride in their work to support students and enrich their experience at school.”
“Support staff perform an increasingly wide range of fulfilling roles in and out of the classroom and there are many career pathways into higher level and senior roles.”
“We believe that successful apprenticeship schemes can support the growth of our school’s talented and engaged workforce, particularly in a recruitment climate where it can often be a challenge to recruit and retain staff with the skills and attributes we need.”
“Matthew is an exciting addition to our workforce. He has brought an injection of youthful talent, with fresh new perspectives and ideas and we cannot wait to see how he progresses in his role over the coming year.”
“Working with Matthew has just proved the impact that apprentices can have, and we look forward to expanding the range of apprenticeship opportunities on offer here in the future.”
