We are delighted to announce that Year 8 and 9 students can audition for the next pair of Blue Coat School Organ Scholarships on 30 November 2021. This follows the great success of our first two Blue Coat School Organ Scholars, Olivia Stone and George Ke, both achieving Distinctions in their Grade 4 Organ exams. Our next two scholars, Charles Fisher and Alexandra Somova, are now advancing to their Grade 4 exams. The Blue Coat School Organ Scholarship, with its close link to the city´s two cathedrals, is unsurpassed in the UK, offering a free course of lessons over a period of five years with tuition on our newly restored historic Father Willis organ, in Shirley Hall, the School Chapel Walker organ, Liverpool Anglican Cathedral Willis organ (the UK’s largest) and Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral Walker organ.

Scholars will have weekly lessons in term time with highly experienced organ teachers, and supervised by Dr Chris McElroy, Director of Music at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, and an Old Blue. Lead Tutor is Lee Ward, Director of Music at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral, and an Old Blue. Deputy tutor is Matthew Breen, Anglican Cathedral Senior Organ Scholar. The two chosen scholars will be taught over five‐years (ending in Year 13) how to play to a very high standard on some of the UK’s best instruments.

This is a very exciting and rare opportunity for two students to expand their musical horizons in a way that possibly no other school can offer. Blue Coat is the only UK state school to have been awarded the Royal College of Organists’ coveted Accredited Institution status, which was presented in September.

If your child is interested in applying, they must have achieved Grade 5 Piano (or above), and their letter of application must state why they wish to learn how to play the organ, plus describing their musical experience and background. The closing date for applications is Friday, 12 November 2021. Applications should be emailed to Director of Music Mr Simon Emery. Auditions will be held on Tuesday 30 November 2021, to demonstrate their practical and theoretical ability for the judging panel. The two successful candidates will be announced soon afterwards.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Liz and Terry Bramall Foundation and The Brereton Memorial Fund for sponsoring our 2021/22 Organ Scholarships.
