Arts

Art Department

The Art Department is dedicated to the creation and appreciation of art as a central and formative education experience. We aim to provide students with the skills and inspiration, which will enable them to explore and develop their ideas with confidence. [read more]

Design and Technology Department

As with the rest of the school, the DT department has undergone radical changes over the last year. 20 new computer workstations are now installed and the department has just received a brand new Laser Cutter, CAM Router and a Roland Sign Maker which will allow all students the opportunity to learn and manufacture using modern CAD/CAM equipment. English Department

The ambitions and aims of the English Department are large and wide-ranging, in keeping with the importance and scope of the subject. We work to produce students who are precise, confident and creative in their appreciation and use of the English language. Equally, we seek to foster and promote a love of literature that may be a life-long affair of the head and heart! [read more]

Latin Department

The study of Latin begins in Yr 8 as an optional extra subject for about 50 pupils, in two sets, selected from those (usually about 75) who wish to undertake this additional academic commitment. For these students, it is later available as an option at GCSE, AS and A2 level. [read more]

Modern Foreign Languages Department

The Modern Foreign Languages Department is clear in its aims, and dedicated to their accomplishment. We seek to develop the ability of all our students to use French and Spanish for the purpose of practical communication. [read more]

Music Department

The making and appreciation of music is one of the most established and vibrant traditions of the Liverpool Blue Coat, and one of the paintings in the archives shows the School Band (of circa. 1840) parading proudly in the Town Centre…. [read more]

Physical Education Department

The philosophy of the Physical Education Department is aptly summed up in the familiar slogan, "Sport for All." We seek to promote all aspects of P.E. and active recreation, and encourage our students to develop physically, personally, socially and morally. [read more]

Humanities

Business Studies / Economics Department

Business Studies is a popular GCSE option, and a solid basis for Economics, which can be studied at both AS and A2 Levels. [read more]

Geography Department

The Department is committed to stimulating student interest in and enjoyment of geography, across the wide range of what the subject has to offer. By the end of a course of study, the Blue Coat student will be familiar with a substantial body of knowledge, and be well schooled in the principles and vocabulary of the discipline. [read more]

History Department

At the Blue Coat School, the study of history is humane, humanising - and scholarly. We seek to promote an enjoyment of history, as the contemplation of the great procession of human civilization through the ages - a thing which naturally promotes both imagination and reflection. [read more]

Religious Education Department

The Department is motivated by a dedication to raising awareness of the religious dimension of life. It seeks to guide the student body into a greater understanding of the religious beliefs and practices of our fellow beings. Further, it calls repeatedly upon our students, as they grow and mature, to explore their own responses to central moral issues, and to think through some of the "big questions" of existence. Politics Department

The Government and Politics Department is going from strength to strength at Blue Coat School, with over fifty students now studying the subject as AS and A2 level. They do so because, like Economics, it is very much an 'up to the minute A level' with events occurring during the year that provide new examples of the theories being studied. [read more]

Sciences

Biology Department

We employ a variety of teaching and learning methods ranging from pupil centred learning and research activities, through to individual practical tests and whole class investigations. All the science laboratories are fitted with interactive whiteboards and all staff are experienced in the use of this technology. Each laboratory has a separate preparation room and we have a first class technical support team for the practical work we undertake. [read more]

Chemistry Department

The Chemistry Department is dedicated to engendering in its students a sense of excitement in the face of the complex wonder of the created, physical universe. The Department seeks to make the way of deeper understanding through scientific enquiry as exciting and absorbing as those who work in the Department sincerely believe it to be. [read more]

Physics Department

The philosophy of the Physics Department is to develop appreciation and understanding of the physical principles that both underpin and power the physical universe, from the most minute particles to the largest things which exist. A range of teaching methods is employed, from the traditional to the innovative, all designed to introduce the key concepts of physics, and develop a critical and rigorously analytical approach to the study of the physical world. Mathematics Department

As a Science and Mathematics Specialist School, the Mathematics Department seeks to inspire students to gain an appreciation of the importance and relevance of Mathematics, as well as to excel academically. [read more]

ICT Department

The ICT Department currently comprises four full-time specialist ICT teachers. Technical support is provided by the Network Manager and an IT Technician.

The school currently has three full size ICT teaching rooms each with 32 workstations and a new 6th form ICT room with 20 state of the art machines. [read more]

Psychology Department

Psychology has been taught at the school for five years and is offered at both AS and A” levels. It is taught by a Colleague with a B.Sc. Honours degree in the subject. Whilst taught independently in its own right (challenging and absorbing), many sixth-formers who aspire to pursue medical career find that it compliments their studies perfectly. [read more]
