In January it was announced that former Physics teacher Mr Caulkin had been awarded an MBE in recognition of his services to education, in the Queen’s New Years’ Honours List.

His longstanding connection with the School dates back to 1958 when he arrived as a Blue Coat student. Seventeen years later Mr Caulkin MBE returned to The Blue Coat School to share his passion for physics, inspiring countless Blue Coat students to pursue the subject at university during his 41 year teaching career.

Accompanied by members of his family, Mr Caulkin travelled to London to receive his official title at the end of March. Presented with his award from His Royal Highness Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace, Mr Caulkin was congratulated and praised for his contribution and for inspiring the next generation of scientists.

Reflecting on his visit Mr Caulkin stated “receiving the MBE award was a totally unexpected surprise and on reflection a great honour for not only me, but the school, as the citation was for services to education. The visit to Buckingham Palace to be invested by Prince Charles was a great joy and a magnificent and memorable event.”
