Thanks to support from our community of Development Fund supporters, Chess Club was able to purchase a range of new equipment, including boards, pieces, clocks and coaching materials to support the club’s rapidly expanding membership.

Due to an influx in membership, the club hosted its very first tournament, a “Blitz” tournament which pitted staff against students in a series of rapid matches. Over 100 games were played in the tournament, with perhaps the most exciting being the eagerly anticipated “Mr Pennington vs Mr Shipgood” fixture. The standard of chess was excellent and holding regular tournaments and leagues is something which the club will continue to do next year.

Reflecting on the impact of Development Fund funding, Year 10 student Deniz remarked “prior to receiving Development Fund funding we didn’t have enough pieces for us all to play our games. We were using broken pawns, coins and bits of paper to replace missing pieces. Now we actually have enough boards and pieces to hold a tournament which is great!”
